MOTT, John Raleigh, methodistischer Laie, Sekretär des CVJM, Friedensnobelpreisträger und Wegbereiter weltweiter ökumenischer Zusammenarbeit, * 25.5. 1865 in Purvis (New York), + 31.1. 1955 in Evanston. - J.R.M. studierte an den Universitäten von Iowa und Cornell, wo er zunächst als örtlicher Sekretär des Christl. Vereins junger Männer (YMCA) fungierte; 1886 weckten Begegnungen mit D.L.Moody und dem Engländer J.E.K. Studd M.s Entschluß zur »Evangelisation der Welt«. 1888-1921 wurde er nacheinander Studentensekretär, ab 1915 Generalsekretär des internationalen YMCA. Die Verbindungen, die J.R.M. im Rahmen seiner Studentenarbeit und im YMCA, auch außerhalb der USA, schaffte - 1890 traf er N.Söderblom, 1891 W.Monod - erwiesen sich als zentrale Voraussetzungen späterer ökumenischer Zusammenarbeit. Sein Missions- und Organisationstalent ließen ihn zum Mitarbeiter und Begründer zahlreicher politischer christlicher Kommittees werden: 1898-1915 wurde er auswärtiger Sekretär, 1915-1921 Generalsekretär des amerikanischen National Council, im Ersten Weltkrieg Generalsekretär des War Work Council. Präsident W.Wilson berief J.R.M 1916 in die amerik.-mexikanische Kommission, 1917 machte er ihn zum Mitglied einer diplomatischen Sondermission nach Rußland, wofür er in Deutschland hart attackiert wurde. Ein Angebot Wilsons, als amerikanischer Botschafter nach China zu gehen, lehnte J.R.M. ab. Er sah seine Aufgabe vor allem in der Mobilisierung von Laien und jungen Menschen, insbesondere von Studierenden, für die weltweite Einigung der Christen. Den von ihm mitbegründeten Studentenmissionsbund, dessen Exekutivausschuß er von 1888-1920 vorstand, bezeichnete J.R.M. als »das größte Aufgebot ausgewählter Persönlichkeiten für das Missionsprogramm der Kirche«. M.s Einfluß auf die Gründung des christlichen Studentenweltbundes, dessen erster Generalsekretär (1895-1920) und Vorsitzender er wurde (1920-1928), kann als herausragende ökumenische Leistung gelten, zumal die meisten der prominenten Führer der ökumenischen Bewegung aus dieser Organisation hervorgingen. J.R.M. gehörte dem ersten Präsidium des im Aufbau begriffenen Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen an und hielt als dessen »Cheflotse« (W.Temple, 1944) bei der ersten Vollversammlung in Amsterdam 1948 die Eröffnungsansprache. - Auf seinen Weltreisen gründete J.R.M. ungefähr 70 christliche Studentenunionen; er organisierte Studentenbewegungen, u.a. in China, Japan und Indien; zahlreiche von ihm ins Leben gerufene Nationale Christenräte führte er im Internationalen Missionsrat zusammen, dessen Vorsitz er, als eines der Gründungsmitglieder (1910) bis 1942 innehatte. J.R.M. galt seiner Zeit als »ein Staatsmann unter Missionaren und ein Missionar unter Staatsmännern«. - Neben der Distinguished Service Medal der USA erhielt J.R.M. 1946 - unter besonderer Hervorhebung seiner Verdienste als Präsident des Weltbundes des YMCA - den Friedensnobelpreis.
