Coombe, Margaret

I am by discipline a historian, and focus on 10th to 12th century Northumbrian history, teach British 1 (Romans to Normans), and supervise postgraduates working on all aspects of hagiography in the broad medieval period in Europe. Before coming to academia, I worked in the City of London, gaining experience in financial, corporate and legal matters, and writing handbooks for clients. I then worked in early years education before returning to academic work: a classics MA at KCL then history and a DPhil and postdoc in Oxford. That varied background enabled me to begin working with students from a variety of disciplines who, for many reasons, found their Oxford degree work too challenging. That led to my current post at LMH, as Director of a newly-established centre devoted to study skills training and teaching. The pilot has been very successful, and we are now working to establish it permanently, to improve the skills of undergraduates in all disciplines and any college. In my spare time (!!) I still work on history, and have published on St Godric of Finchale, and given papers in Leeds, London, Oxford and Reading. I was awarded 'Best Support Staff' in the student-led awards 2014, was nominated again by my students as Best Tutor in 2019, and was a finalist in the Oxford Innovation awards for my study skills work.
