Human, Dirk
Professor Dirk J Human is Head of the Department Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures, at the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
In 1983 he received the degrees BA (Admission) and BA Hons (Semitic Languages) simultaneously from the Rand Afrikaans University (both with distinction). He majored in Greek 3, Hebrew 3, Biblical Studies 3, and Latin 2. Then he obtained a MA (Semitic Languages) from the University of Johannesburg (then Rand Afrikaans University - 1984). In 1986 he further obtained BD (with distinction) and DD (Old Testament Studies - with distinction) degrees, both from the University of Pretoria (1993). His dissertation is entitled The concept berit (covenant) in selected Psalms of Lament. He studied during research visits in Munich (1991-1992), Vienna (1999) and Marburg (2001-2002). Furthermore, he is recipient of the DAAD (1990-1) and Alexander von Humboldt (2001, 2011) scholarships.
Dirk Human is member of various national and international scientific associations and societies, including the Old Testament Society of South Africa (OTSSA), Southern African Society for Biblical and Religious Studies (SASBRS), Association for the Study of Religion in Southern Africa (ASRSA), the South African Society for Ancient Near Eastern Studies (SASNES), the South African Academy for Sciences and Arts (LAkad), the International Organisation for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT), the European Association for Biblical Studies (EABS), the DAAD Alumni (SA) Association, the Von Humboldt Fellowship Association (SA) and the Society for Biblical Literature (SBL). He is currently the Secretary of the North Western Chapter of the Alexander von Humboldt Alumni in South Africa.
Human started his academic career at UP as lecturer (1992-94); then he became senior lecturer (1995-96), associate-professor (1997-98) and full-professor (1999-). From 2000-2012 he was Head of Religion Studies and Professor in Old Testament Studies. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Open Access online-theological journal Verbum et Ecclesia (2002-2015: Scopus; Sciello SA) and Chairperson of the South African Editors’ Forum for Theology and Related Journals (2007-2015). During his academic career he has visited several national and international universities and academic institutions; presented several papers at national and international congresses and published extensively. This includes the publication of several scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in books, and author or co-author of books. His scholarly interests focus inter alia on Hebrew Poetry, Psalms, Hermeneutics, Old Testament Theology, History of Religion(s), Religion(s) in African context, and Gender themes. Several Masters, Doctoral and post-doctoral candidates completed their projects under his supervision. His postgraduate students and research associates also published a huge number of articles as part of his research projects.
